Understanding behavioral health levels of care

Mental health and substance use treatment follows a continuum of care designed to provide the right support at the right time. Each level addresses specific needs:

  • Outpatient Services (OP): The least intensive option, offering periodic therapy and medication management for those managing symptoms.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Structured sessions multiple times a week for individuals needing more support than outpatient care.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): A step up from IOP, providing therapy and education five days a week without 24-hour supervision.
  • Residential Treatment (RTC): Live-in care with round-the-clock support for long-term recovery when other levels aren’t enough.
  • Acute Detox: 24/7 medical supervision for individuals experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms.
  • Acute Inpatient Hospitalization (IP): The most intensive level, offering immediate crisis intervention and stabilization in a hospital setting.
